Ippudo: A Ramen Experience

When the average college student thinks of ramen, usually the cherished memories of late-night cram sessions with Styrofoam and foil packets flood the senses. Traditionally the food of Japanese peasants, ramen noodles have become an icon of not only hard work and simplicity, but cheapness and convenience as well. The noodle house Ippudo in New York, however, challenges you to reconsider this image. Located in East Village, the line on 4th Avenue outside Ippudo starts to build an hour before its dinner hours begin at 5pm. By fifteen minutes to the hour, a healthy throng of fifty to sixty hungry noodle-fans block the sidewalk, prompting both pedestrians and vehicles to pause and ask the reason. “Noodles? That’s it?” Most had a hard time understanding why one would stand in line for another version of the common dish, myself included, if not for the strong hype built from repeat customers.

New Haven Noodles (Part 2): York St. Noodle House- Simple and Savory

As part of my mission to explore food in New Haven, I decided to visit three Yale noodle house staples and gauge their quality for myself: Ivy Noodle, York St. Noodle, and Bentara. If you missed part one, check out the review of Ivy Noodle.

Walking down York Street, the casual passerby cannot possibly miss the large neon sign advertising the presence of “York St. Noodle House.” With seating outside and inside, the cozy environment seems inviting and smells like sizzling meat. As I look at the menu, I see that the entrée prices here match Ivy Noodle, with noodle bowls and plates around six to seven dollars.

New Haven Noodles (Part 1): Ivy Noodle- Lightning Fast Lo Mein

The New Haven food scene pales in vibrancy and variety next to nearby New York City or Boston. Even so, certain types of restaurants do abound around Yale, including pizza, Thai, and noodle houses. New Haven noodles range from diner food to sit down restaurants, and similarly differ in quality. I decided to visit three Yale staples and gauge their quality for myself: Ivy Noodle, York St. Noodle, and Bentara.
