Cheeburger Opens With a Rocky Start

Erica C., University of Delaware

When Cheeburger Cheeburger first opened a few weeks ago after a nearly 9 month delay, anxious students were clamoring to get their first sips of milkshakes and bites of burger. But in my own first experience, this crowd wasn’t the only thing causing chaos at Cheeburger, which seemed discombobulated, disorganized and disinterested in serving customers in a quick and efficient manner. Wilmington Restaurant Week and Vinoteca 902

Erica C., University of Delaware

Each year it hits January and I realize I’m stuck in Newark or studying abroad for NYC restaurant week. Naturally, my first thought is to be disappointed and then reassure myself that I’m probably saving money by not attending. Well, until now.

While Wilmington Restaurant Week had never occurred to me in the past, this year I tried it out with the reservation-making help of my Delawarian Boyfriend. I had first heard of Vinoteca 902 when reading the News Journal’s Blog about the restaurant, and after hearing about risotto croquettes and rosemary lamb sirloin, I wanted to get there. Luckily, their restaurant week menu was just as appealing and this Saturday, we journeyed the (gasp) 20 minutes to downtown Wilmington to try it out. Continue reading

Best Of UDelaware’s Happy Hour

Erica C, University of Delaware

With Spring break approaching and the end of senior year coming right after, students are finding excuses to hit happy hour more often than usual. While most seniors have tried out Sante Fe Grill, a prime happy hour spot on Main Street- it’s time to get creative and sample some of the other superior options.

Whether you’re more into margaritas or dying for some Dogfish Head bear, students are lucky enough to have a variety of options close by and of course, everyday of the week.

Here are some of the best happy hour options: Continue reading

Main Street Bucket List

by Erica C., University of Delaware

As seniors like myself get closer to graduation, many of us have adopted the classic bucket list, with the expected items like jumping in the south campus fountain. But many seniors also start their own food bucket list. No, not to eat every single item sold on campus,  but altering the list to include eating at every restaurant on Main Street. This sounds like an easy task, but with nearly 50 restaurants in the local area (many of which have just opened within the last few months) many of us, including myself, are scrambling to complete the mission. This also means that when Chee Burger Chee Burger finally opens (if ever) and Chipotle is completed, these must be added to the list. Continue reading

Fork Offers Plate Upon Plate of Good Eats

Erica C., University of Delaware

Like I said a two weeks ago, I rarely go to Philly. That being said, two of my favorite culinary experiences have been there. Coincidence? Probably not.

This week I want to talk about Fork Restaurant, a spot on Market Street in Philadelphia. The bistro serves New American food and the menu is as creative as it is plain tasty. The decor is modern and the dark setting with red couches lining the walls and deco light fixtures set the mood for an elegantly cool evening. Continue reading

Parking the Only Downside to Parc Restaurant

Erica C., University of Delaware

With Philadelphia only 45 minutes away, it has always shocked me how little I hear of students driving in for a meal. It seems as though going out to eat in Philly has become a special occasion retreat for University of Delaware students, and special occasions only. I must admit that I fall into this trap as well, only taking the trip only a few times a semester. Finally though, I have found a reason to keep going back- Parc Restaurant. This Valentines Day, the meal I enjoyed there on Rittenhouse Square may just push me to change my attitude and stop by more often. Continue reading

Top 5 Under-the-Radar Restaurants at University of Delaware

Erica C., University of Delaware

The food-scape that makes up Main Street has for generations allowed university students to have a wide variety of culinary genres at their finger tips.  But this proximity also poses problems for restaurants that find themselves slightly off the beaten path. Students become accustomed to hitting the same spots- Santa Fe Grill, Klondike Kates and Cucina de Napoli, and rarely jump in their cars and try to find something new.

Restaurants right up Kirkwood Highway and even down the block in the Newark Shopping Center often crave student attention- even though the fare is usually different, and in some cases way better than what we’ve become accustomed to on Main Street.

So next time you’re going out to dinner, check into some of these options and broaden your campus food horizons. Continue reading
