The CatManDo Packs Value Into Lunch Box Deal

Nathan S., Macalester College

The reason I stepped into the CatManDo Himalayan restaurant on the corner of Grand and Macalester streets was because I saw a huge sign advertising a “$6.45 LUNCH BOX” in the window. I had also had a very good introductory experience to Himalayan cuisine earlier in the year, so I was anxious to gain some more knowledge and new tastes. As soon as I entered, I observed a very inviting, cozy atmosphere infused with smells coming from the kitchen. A friendly waitress greeted me and showed me to the buffet where the boxed lunches were located. She handed me a box and encouraged me to fill it up with anything from the buffet I desired. The Grandest Sandwich at Macalester

Nathan S., Macalester College

Nestled between two other notable restaurants just west of Macalester College on Grand Avenue lies a fairly new and unknown deli restaurant by the name of Grand Sandwich. It was started last year by Daniel Esrig, a recent economics and geography double major graduate at Macalester, who wanted to “fill a niche” in the neighborhood, which previously lacked a deli. El Norteño Offers No Reason For Return

Nathan S., Macalester College

The field assignment for my Regional Geography of Latin America class was to investigate vibrant Latin American immigrant communities in the Twin Cities. Out of the twelve possible sites, I chose the closest one to campus: El Norteño, a Mexican restaurant about a 20 minute bike ride from Macalester. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, my friend and I hopped on our bikes and set off across the Mississippi River and into Minneapolis. Continue reading

Shish Isn’t Just For Kebabs

Nathan S., Macalester College

Surrounded by the copious sandwich shops and pizzerias on Grand Avenue, a single restaurant serves up traditional Mediterranean cuisine to community members, commuters, and college students alike. Shish offers an affordable alternative to traditional American fast food with gyros, falafel, hummus, and tabouli. The café offers a small dining space with an additional room (although sometimes not enough to hold the crowds) in the back to accommodate food rushes. Due to the relatively small café size and convenience, many patrons (college students in particular) chose to phone ahead of time and pick their order up. Continue reading

The Tallest Taste in the Twin Cities

Nathan S., Macalester College

With the departure of my parents looming, my family and I needed one more “family dinner” together before we parted ways. We were in Mac Groveland, a neighborhood in Saint Paul, Minnesota that plays host to Macalester College. Situated three blocks away from Macalester lies the restaurant that claims to have the “tallest taste in the Twin Cities.” Everest on Grand, which serves up traditional Himalayan cuisine, seemed like the perfect choice for my last family dinner for more than two months.
