Adventurous Eating and Thrill

Zach Bell, Yale University

From the thrill of the first pitch, to a royal flush, to that first instant of free fall, humans revel in the thrill of competition. We love the adrenaline high, that state of fluctuating power borne of our courage and prowess. Most associate thrill-seekers with extreme sports or danger, but with the growing industry of food tourism, some now get their adrenaline hits from food.

Pancakes and Patricia’s

Zach B., Yale University

From the outside, Patricia’s Restaurant doesn’t look like much. In fact, it doesn’t look much better on the inside, sporting a few worn booths and a tiny kitchen that looks like it had once been a storage closet. Patricia’s is the paradigm of the greasy spoon diner, simple accommodations and honest food for a low price. (Pictures after the jump)

Oaxaca Kitchen: Still Waiting for Some Heat

Zach B., Yale University

In a college town, restaurants have to find a niche market. An establishment often has to choose between quick, low price meals for the college student on a budget, and more expensive long service meals for a special night out or for professors and residents of the surrounding area. Oaxaca Kitchen, a new restaurant near Yale, tries to capture both demographics, with relatively pricier options and an extensive bar facing off against casual Mexican fare. As a result, the food fails to find its voice.

Gorging on Sushi: Part One- Sushi Mizu

Zach B., Yale University

A staple of anthropological writing is the analysis of communal dining patterns as a way to understand human relationships. Pages have been written about the death of the family dinner and what this means for American family life. Yet, the group dinner has life in it still, friends can still gather to share a peaceful moment in an otherwise hectic day. Zach B., Yale University

Billing itself as “Cuban cuisine and more,” Soul de Cuba Café has a tall order to fill. In its name, the restaurant claims to embody the soul of Cuba. I had to find out if the food backs up the name.

New Haven Noodles (Part 2): York St. Noodle House- Simple and Savory

Zach B., Yale University

As part of my mission to explore food in New Haven, I decided to visit three Yale noodle house staples and gauge their quality for myself: Ivy Noodle, York St. Noodle, and Bentara. If you missed part one, check out the review of Ivy Noodle.

Walking down York Street, the casual passerby cannot possibly miss the large neon sign advertising the presence of “York St. Noodle House.” With seating outside and inside, the cozy environment seems inviting and smells like sizzling meat. As I look at the menu, I see that the entrée prices here match Ivy Noodle, with noodle bowls and plates around six to seven dollars.
